This cupboard was built of solid reclaimed chestnut for special customers, Bob & Barbara. The custom made bathroom cabinet measures 66" tall x 20" wide x 14" deep. Built of solid chestnut siding from a 175 year old barn from down in Kentucky, the surface of the beautiful re-used planks are adorned with worm holes, and checks, adding charm to the nearly 2 centuries of patina. Brushing only traditional Linseed oil (no stains) over the chestnut's surface instantly un-cloaks all these wonderful hues. It's like the color has been just sitting there all that time, just waiting to burst out!

The glass panes for the upper doors were cut out of a very old local church attic window. If you look closely, you can see the imperfections of the old "poured glass" panes.

A shot of the "real" mortise & tennons used in the doors of this piece. The tennons fit tightly into the mortise holes. We drill square holes through the tennons, and then do the same to the stiles at approximately 1/32" closer to the outside of the door. This is done so that when the pin is driven into the two holes after the door parts are assembled, it will pull the two parts securely to each other.

After starting this piece, we came up with the idea of incorporating an antique lantern into the piece. Bob was thrilled, especially when we shared that we weren't charging any extra. Bob has been a good customer over the years. We were given artistic license to come up with a way to use the lantern, and made a holder with old wrought iron that can be inserted into either side of the cupboard, which also doubles as a handle. After firing Bob an e-mail showing him an image of the holder, he wrote back, "Very nice... Looks like something right out of Washington's grandmother's house. Very creative."
All our soapstone comes from Vermont Soapstone Co. The stone is soft enough that we can use metal tools to add worn edges and surfaces to the new stone, giving the appearance of a counter top that has seen many years of service.

A close up of the dovetail joinery used to fasten the fronts and backs of the drawer to the sides.

We used chestnut to turn the knobs. We chose a square style to accent the overall design of the cupboard. The knobs are in harmony with the square pegs that hold the doors together.

We coal forged "finger loops" into the hand made adjustable shelf wrought iron hardware. These are the sorts of attention to detail that our clients say separate us from others.
