Early Settler's Butternut Pencil Post Bed Reproduction
This rustic pencil post reproduction is similar in style to the Shaker pencil post bed. Built by hand of wormy butternut wood, this bed is unpretentious, yet it has historic charm. The simple posts have a slight eased edge down to the point where they meet with the tops of the head and foot boards. The bottom portion of the posts are tapered like the bed is set upon legs.

The bottom was built of 3/4" furniture grade plywood. It was built in two sections, and was reinforced with hardwood support boards.

A close-up of the method we use to make our beds the most sturdy you'll ever find. Most manufacturers screw in a 6" lag/bolt into the end of the side rails, then secure the head and foot boards to these bolts. The problem occurs over time, when the lags start to loosen from the side rails. We build in our blacksmith shop, full length bolts that run from the outside of the foot board, through a slot cut into the side rails, all the way to the head board. Tightening the bolt from behind the headboard tightens the entire bed.
